Which species are plausible depends heavily on where you are: a brown recluse in Kansas is routine, a brown recluse in Oregon almost never is. Pick your state to see the biting species with verified records there, when they are active, and how to tell them apart.

These state pages cover the United States. If you are somewhere else, the season and the species both change — Brazil and Australia run on an inverted calendar, and Europe has a different tick.
- United States Ticks are the medically dominant group, and they differ sharply by region.
- Brazil Seasons are inverted: the peak runs October through April, with the rainy season driving both mosquitoes and scorpions.
- United Kingdom One risk that matters (ticks), a lot of nuisance biting (midges, mosquitoes, horseflies), and essentially no venomous species.
- Germany Two tick-borne illnesses rather than one: Lyme borreliosis nationwide, plus TBE in designated southern regions where a vaccine exists.
- France A north–south split.
- Canada Short, intense season.
- Australia Southern-hemisphere season, plus first-aid advice that genuinely differs from the rest of the world.
