Fire ant vs yellowjacket sting

Wait a day. Fire ant stings develop a small sterile white pustule at 24 hours — nothing else in North America does this reliably. Yellowjacket stings swell hard and hurt more at the time but leave no pustule.

What actually settles it

The pustule. Diagnostic for fire ants. Leave it intact; breaking it invites infection.

The pattern. Fire ants anchor with their jaws and sting in an arc, so welts form a curve or ring. Yellowjacket stings are separate and scattered.

Where you were. Fire ants: standing on grass, especially after rain, in the Southeast and parts of the Southwest. Yellowjackets: food, bins, ground nests, late summer.

Both can cause anaphylaxis in sensitised people. Breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness or hives away from the site means emergency services.

Questions

Can you have both at once?

Yes, and it happens more often than people expect — which is why the pattern of the bites matters more than any single mark.

Which one is more serious?

Neither carries a significant disease risk in the US. For both, the common complication is infection from scratching.

What if I still cannot tell?

Photograph the bites over several days and note where on your body they appear and when. Progression and position identify a bite far more reliably than a single photograph.
