Bed bug bites vs mosquito bites

Timing and pattern. A mosquito bite swells within minutes and is usually gone in one to three days. Bed bug welts often appear hours or days after the bite, arrive in lines of three or more, and itch for one to two weeks.

What actually settles it

Did you notice it happening? Mosquito bites announce themselves — you feel the itch start while you are still awake. Bed bug bites are noticed on waking, because the insect injects an anaesthetic and feeds during the small hours.

Arrangement. Random single bumps versus lines and clusters on the same body areas morning after morning.

Duration. A bite still itching a week later is far more likely to be a bed bug.

Where you were. Mosquitoes bite outdoors at dusk or in a room with an open window; bed bugs bite in a specific bed. If bites appear only after nights at one address, that is the answer.

When either one needs a doctor

Questions

Can you have both at once?

Yes, and it happens more often than people expect — which is why the pattern of the bites matters more than any single mark.

Which one is more serious?

Mosquito bite carries the wider disease risk in the US. For both, the common complication is infection from scratching.

What if I still cannot tell?

Photograph the bites over several days and note where on your body they appear and when. Progression and position identify a bite far more reliably than a single photograph.
