Bed bug bites vs flea bites

Two questions settle it: where on the body, and in what arrangement. Bed bugs bite uncovered skin — arms, shoulders, neck — in lines of three or more. Fleas jump from the floor and bite ankles and shins in irregular clusters.

What actually settles it

Height on the body is the fastest test. Fleas live in carpet and pet bedding and jump; almost everything below the knee. Bed bugs come out of the mattress and feed on whatever skin the duvet leaves exposed.

Then look at the arrangement. Bed bugs produce a line or a zigzag because the insect is disturbed mid-meal and moves a few millimetres. Flea clusters are irregular.

Then check the room. Bed bug evidence — dark ink-like spots in the mattress seam, shed skins, live insects the size of an apple pip — is far more reliable than reading the bites. For fleas, check the pet and comb for flea dirt.

The mark itself: flea bites are smaller and harder with a clear central puncture; bed bug welts are flatter and broader.

When either one needs a doctor

Questions

Can you have both at once?

Yes, and it happens more often than people expect — which is why the pattern of the bites matters more than any single mark.

Which one is more serious?

Flea bite carries the wider disease risk in the US. For both, the common complication is infection from scratching.

What if I still cannot tell?

Photograph the bites over several days and note where on your body they appear and when. Progression and position identify a bite far more reliably than a single photograph.
